Projecting a Camera $25.95 In Projecting a Camera, film theorist Edward Branigan offers a groundbreaking approach to understanding film theory. Why, for example, does a camera move? What does a camera "know"? (And when does it know it?) What is the camera's relation to the subject during long static shots? What happens when the screen is blank? Through a wide-ranging engagement with Wittgenstein and theorists of film, he offers one of the most fully developed understandings of the ways in which the camera operates in film. With its thorough grounding in the philosophy of spectatorship and narrative, Projecting a Camera takes the study of film to a new level. With the care and precision that he brought to Narrative Comprehension and Film, Edward Branigan maps the ways in which we must understand the role of the camera, the meaning of the frame, the role of the spectator, and other key components of film-viewing. By analyzing how we think, discuss, and marvel about the films we see, Projecting a Camera, offers insights rich in implications for our understanding of film and film studies. |

Press Camera $73.28 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A press camera is a medium or large format camera suitable for use by press photographers. Press cameras most commonly employ the 45 inch film format. Models have also been produced for the 2.253.25 inch format (69 cm), and various 120 film formats from 66 cm. through 612 cm. European press cameras, such as the Goertz and Van Neck, used the 9x12cm format, marginally smaller than the 4 5 format. The press camera is still in wide use in photoreportage and among fine art photographers who use it as a low cost more compact alternative to a view camera. Advances in film technology, notably finer film grain, have obviated the need for largeformat cameras for most press assignments, however. In news photography, the press camera has been largely supplanted by the smaller formats of 120 film and 135 film, and more recently by digital cameras. No Film in My Camera $77.99 Why would you purposefully shoot scenes with no film in your camera? To find the answer, you will need to read this memoir, in which internationallyknown Director/Cameraman Bill Gibson recounts some of his most exciting assignments of the past six decades. His career as a combat cameraman propelled him through World War II with the Navy, the Korean Conflict with the Air Force, and to Vietnam as a civilian on assignment with the U.S. Marines. His stories begin with the harrowing retelling of a kamikaze and torpedo attack against the USS Hornet (the Aircraft Carrier that brought the Doolittle Raiders within striking distance of the Japanese homeland) and continue through time and across space, taking the reader on a rollicking ride through history as told through one mans camera. Gibson offers up riots in Indonesia, uprisings in Africa, and coverage of world leaders that reads like a twentiethcentury whos who: FDR, Harry Truman, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Charles Lindbergh, Albert Schweitzer, DeGaulle, John F. Kennedy, Reagan, and many others. He also provides insights into the frustrations and triumphs of Americas space program, from his vantage point as a consultant to NASA on the photographic coverage of Apollo 11. In No Film in My Camera, Gibson brings all of these scenes to life, not only with his photography, but also with detail and emotion. Author: Gibson, Bill/ Lousma, Jack R. Documentary Film: Contexts and Criticism $23.41 Documentary Film: Contexts and Criticism is designed to complement Rollysons Documentary Film: A Primer. The films discussed in this volume include Zelig, the Lumiere brothers documentaries, Nanook of the North, The Man With a Movie Camera, Triumph of the Will, Olympia, The Wonderful Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl, Why We Fight, Fires Were Started, and several Jill Craigie films, including an extended discussion of Two Hours From London, her controversial examination of the Balkan wars and the siege of Dubrovnik. What sets this text apart from other studies of documentary is that it includes a wide array of student comments on the films and reviews very much centered in discussions of the documentary tradition. In this same vein, Rollyson has included his essay, Jill Craigie and the Documentary Tradition exploring her relationship with John Grierson and other prominent documentary filmmakers. This dialogic text captures some of the actual giveandtake of the classroom and the range of opinion that even the best critics cannot convey. What should emerge from the reading of these comments are the different voices (mindsets) through which the films are viewed. World Film Locations: Los Angeles $20 World Film Locations: Los Angeles is an engaging and highly visual city-wide tour of both well known and slightly lesser known films shot on location in one of the birthplaces of cinema and the ‘screen spectacle’. Brief but concise reviews of 50 carefully chosen film scenes explore how motion pictures have shaped the role of Los Angeles in our collective consciousness, as well as how these cinematic moments reveal aspects of the life and culture of a city that are often hidden from view. Complimenting these scenes from such varied films as Chinatown, Falling Down, The Player and Boyz n’ The Hood are six spotlight essays that look at key directors, themes, and historical periods that help us to make sense of this vibrant yet disconnected city. Illustrated throughout with dynamic screen captures, stills of filming locations as they appear now and city maps that include location information, World Film Locations: Los Angeles is at once a guided tour of the ‘city of angels’ conducted by the likes of Robert Altman, Michael Mann, Nicholas Ray and Roman Polanski while also being an indispensible record of how Los Angeles has fired both the imaginations of individuals working behind the camera and those of us sitting transfixed in movie theatres. |

Instant Film $98.77 Instant film is a type of photographic film first introduced by Polaroid that is designed to be used in an instant camera (and, with accessory hardware, with many professional film cameras). The film contains the chemicals needed for developing and fixing the photo, and the instant camera exposes and initiates the developing process after a photograph has been taken. In earlier Polaroid instant cameras the film is pulled through rollers which breaks open a pod containing a reagent that is spread between the exposed negative and receiving positive sheet. This film sandwich develops for a predetermined time, depending on film type and ambient temperature, after which the positive sheet is peeled away from the negative to reveal the developed photo. In 1972, Polaroid introduced integral film, which incorporated timing and receiving layers to automatically develop and fix the photo without any intervention from the photographer. Instant film is available in sizes from 24 mm x 36 mm (similar to 135 film) up to 20 x 24 size, with the most popular film sizes for consumer snapshots being approximately 31/4 x 41/4 (the image itself is smaller as it is surrounded by a bord Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 132 Publication Date: 2010/10/31 Language: English Dimensions: 9.02 x 5.98 x 0.31 inches |

Film After Film (Hardcover) $27.92 In this sly and thought-provoking essay, Village Voice film critic J. Hoberman suggests that it`s possible to speak of a distinctive twenty-first century cinema, only a decade into the new millennium. The advent of a new digital technology has led to the displacement of the medium of film-and of the real, as digital image-making ends the necessity of having an actual world, let alone the need for a camera. The future history of motion pictures, Hoberman asserts, will be the history of animation. Meanwhile, the 2000 American presidential election and the trauma of 9/11 have reshaped the movies politically. The two events have combined to create a rupture in film history, perhaps presaging, as Susan Sontag forlornly predicted at the close of the century, the death of cinema, or at least cinephilia. This witty and allusive book, in the style of classic film theorist/critics like Andr Bazin and Siegfried Kracauer, expands on a much-discussed article by Hoberman from Artforum and includes considerations of global cinema`s most important figures and films, from Lars von Trier and Zia Jiangke to WALL-E, Avatar, and Inception. |
